Obasanjo canvasses constant training for security personnel

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday canvassed the need for the military authorities to invest more in the training of their officers and men to get the best out of them.
Obasanjo said this at the launch of the Biannual Special Training and Capacity Development seminar, organised by the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos.
The former president, who said he left  a programme at Abeokuta involving UNESCO, 50 Universities and 30 Secondary Schools, to attend the launch , emphasised the importance of training.
“I believe there is no substitute training for both the military and the paramilitary.
“When I heard that the police would be embarking on this, I decided to come for a few minutes and encourage this new training scheme.
“Every human institution needs constant appraisal, regeneration of themselves and training.
“You, by the nature of your job, must be aware and be in  touch with new developments in your jobs, responsibilities  and be  up-to-date with happenings in other parts of the world.
“We have experts and practitioners in Nigeria coming together to give you the best and the latest.
“I want to wish you the best in this enterprise and I hope it is out to be sustained because a training of  three years ago in a continually changing world today is outdated,’’ Obasanjo said.
Mr Kayode Aderanti, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), in charge of Zone 2, Lagos and Ogun States, Zone 2, also emphasised the importance of training in the contemporary world.
“It is no longer news that the world today is changing. If you don’t acquaint yourself with up-to-date training today, you will be irrelevant.
“It is necessary for security agencies to be on top of their beats because of the changing faces of crime.
“We, as security agents, need to be a step ahead and this can only be achieved with training.
“In line with the directive of the Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris, for democratic policing, I took it upon myself to put up a platform like this.
“I am sure that at the end, participants will gain what they will put into their practice so that Nigerians will appreciate us whenever they have an encounter with the Nigeria Police,’’ he said.
Also,  the IG of police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, declaring the programme open, said democratic policing cannot be achieved without giving the right training to policemen.
“We need to re-enforce our personnel to meet the yearnings of the people.
“This process of actualising our core values has just been given a quantum leap with this training.
“This is a laudable programme which will go a long way in improving the Nigeria Police.
“It is a matter of time when the Nigeria Police will not only be celebrated at home but abroad,’’ he said
